Navigating Lewis and Clark
Some useful resources

A good place to start your exploration of the Lewis and Clark story is our Comprehensive Center Web site: www.nwrac.org/lewis-clark/index.html. Here you will find a list of books and articles, a listserv for teachers, and links to curriculum ideas already in place in several schools around the region. Below is a list of other Web sites we have found useful.

www.nwrac.org/pub/schoolwide/fall01/
Schoolwide Northwest is the Comprehensive Center's newsletter, and the Fall 2001 issue is all about Lewis and Clark. We offer a series of articles that we hope will spark your interest in incorporating this fascinating adventure story into your school's curriculum. The journey of the Corps of Discovery has something for every age level and every course of study.

www.lewisandclark.org
This is the site developed by the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. Contains several informative articles, with a particularly interesting article about Sacagewea.

www.lewisandclark.com
This is a great site put together by Montana Magazine. It includes Related Links ("An excellent resource for school assignments."), and an up-to-date Calendar of Events.

www.lewisandclark200.org
The Web site of the National Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Council, this includes up to date information about possible places to visit along the trail, and links to information about the many different tribes involved in the Lewis & Clark story.

www.lcarchive.org
An on-line archive of links to the many different Web sites dealing with the Lewis & Clark story. A great resource if you're looking for a specific Web site or angle on the story-a little overwhelming if you aren't, as it lists more than 500 Web sites.

www.lewis-clark.org
Another great site, put together by the University of Montana. This site features "interpretive episodes" written by U. of M. professor Harry Fritz. It's a quick and easy way to find out about particular journal entries or locations along the trail. Very good graphics make it appealing to young students.

www.oyate.org
A great site for getting a Native American perspective on various issues. Though it doesn't contain information specific to the Lewis and Clark story, it can definitely help educators understand the cultural complexity of the expedition.

www.nwrac.org/links/indian.html
The link to our Indian Education resources page. Includes several resources that can help teachers look at Native American views of the story.

www.pbs.org/lewisandclark
The PBS Web site. This features a Classroom Resources section, along with an interactive Into the Unknown story, in which "you are leading the expedition."

www.nwrel.org/teachlewisandclark/
This site features great examples of how individual teachers have worked the Lewis and Clark story into their curriculum.

www.nationalgeographic.com/lewisclark/index.html
A high-quality, fun, and very educational site, with interactive games, a tour of the trail with extensive maps and pictures, and multi-level lesson plans.

www.keelboat.com
In May of 1804 the Lewis & Clark expedition set out in a 55' keel boat along with two pirogues on their now famous expedition of discovery. Keel boats of this era were pushed, pulled, rowed, and sailed up the Missouri river. The red pirogue and the white pirogue were a form of longboat which closely resembled other small river craft plying the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in the early 1800's.
